Description

In 1910, The Merion Cricket Club Golf Committee assigned architect Hugh Wilson the task of creating a new golf course since the Haskell ball had outdated the short Haverford's course that existed on the land. Wilson used the adjoining Ardmore land bought from the Haverford Development Company for the east course's current location. The east course was routed, prepared and seeded by the fall of 1911. To date the origin of the wicker basket is a mystery. It is known that in 1915, then superintendent William Flynn, received patent approval for the wicker basket design. From that fall until today, those baskets have been a trademark of Merion. Traditions at Merion are concerned with the playing of the game: No mulligans are permitted on the first tee, players and caddies alike are expected to respect the course and each day leave it in better condition then they found it, and slow play will earn you a quick and harsh reprimand from the club. Merion has host 5 U.S Opens ( 1934,1950,1971,1981, 2013), 6 U.S Amateurs ( 1916,1924,1930,1966,1989,2005), 4 U.S. Women's Amateurs (1904, 1909, 1926, 1949), and a Walker Cup (2009).
